About the place

On the slope above Vosne-Romanée lies a plot of about 1.8 hectares that wine lovers travel from across the world to see. La Romanée-Conti is a grand cru owned entirely by the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. A stone cross marks the vineyard. There is nothing to visit inside, but standing at its edge is a moment many remember.

What you will see

From the vineyard lane you see the stone cross and the rows of Pinot Noir running up the slope. Around it lie other legendary grands crus, including La Tâche and Richebourg, so a single glance takes in a remarkable concentration of great vineyards. It is a place for a photograph and a moment of quiet, before a walk through the village of Vosne-Romanée.

History

The vineyard's story is tied to the monks of the abbey of Saint-Vivant, who held much of Vosne's land for centuries. In 1760 Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, bought the plot, then called La Romanée, and his name was later added to it. Sold at auction after the Revolution, the vineyard today forms a monopole of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Production is tiny, usually a few thousand bottles a year, and it varies a great deal with the vintage. The vineyard is part of the Climats of Burgundy, listed by UNESCO in 2015. Its fame has made the wine one of the most expensive in the world. In 2026 a single bottle of the 1945 vintage sold at auction in New York for 812,500 US dollars, a world record.

Tips for your visit

The vineyard is private and the vines are fragile, so stay on the lane, never step between the rows and never pick grapes. A short stop is enough. The vineyard roads are narrow, so a quick drop-off by your driver is the easiest way. There are no opening times, as the view is there in every season. Check the official tourist office website for walking maps of the village.
