The Rion family has made wine in Vosne-Romanée since 1896. Their domaine, on the main road below the village, is now run by Armelle Rion and her three daughters. Visitors come for two passions: the great wines of the Côte de Nuits and the Burgundy truffle, found on the estate by trained dogs.
Visits are led in French or English by the family or their team. The shortest, the Découverte, lasts about 40 minutes: a look at the cellar and a tasting of five wines from the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune with a truffle treat. Longer visits add the vat house, premiers crus and the domaine's Clos de Vougeot, aged more than ten years. The Trésors de la Côte visit, on weekday mornings, sets off with a Lagotto dog to hunt truffles before a tasting.
In 1896 Pierre Rion, a former sharecropper of the Château de la Berchère, bought vines and settled in Vosne-Romanée. His son Louis enlarged the domaine, which was divided between Louis's two sons in 1952. The elder, Marcel, stayed in Vosne. Bernard Rion worked alongside his father from 1973 and ran the domaine with his wife Armelle until 2019.
Today Armelle and her three daughters run it. Alice has made the wines since 2006, with her husband Louis in charge of the vineyard. Nelly, the eldest, came back in 2015 to look after sales, and Mélissa joined in 2018 to run the visits. The vines lie in Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vougeot, Pommard and Meursault, from regional wines up to the Clos de Vougeot grand cru. Since the 1990s Armelle and Bernard have also harvested Burgundy truffles with their Lagotto Romagnolo dogs.

Visits are by reservation only, from Monday to Saturday, when the cellar is open from 9:00 to 17:30. Prices start at €18 per person for the Découverte, from two people; a vineyard tour with the grower costs €70, and the truffle hunt €85 from four people. The cellar has no wheelchair access, but tastings can be held upstairs. In the village, beside the church, the family's Boutique Bernard Rion sells wines, truffle products and snacks.
What to combine with Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion on the same day, nearest first.
Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion is about 26 min from Beaune by road (23 km). With a private driver, the trip from Beaune starts at €100 for the whole car, up to 4 guests.
Did you know? The dogs can only smell truffles once they are ripe, so every truffle the family sells has been found at full maturity.
