About the château

Château de la BerchèreChâteau de la BerchèreChâteau de la BerchèreChâteau de la Berchère

Between Nuits-Saint-Georges and the village of Boncourt-le-Bois, the Château de la Berchère sits on a moated platform with round towers and a Renaissance gallery. For nearly three centuries it was the country seat of a family of Burgundian magistrates. Today it is a hotel with 19 rooms, a pool and a park.

History

In 1245 Gui de la Berchère received the house and rights over the village as a fief from the duke. In 1463 the estate was acquired by Jean Le Goux, from Nuits-Saint-Georges, who was ennobled by Duke Charles the Bold and added de la Berchère to his name. His family rose in the law courts and the Parlement of Burgundy, and in 1634 the first president of the Parlement had the château rebuilt.

In December 1738 the estate passed to the Joly de Bévy family. It was sold as national property during the Revolution, and the family later recovered part of it. The château saw fighting during the war of 1870 and was occupied during the Second World War. The Forest-Divonne family restored it in 1905 and 1906, and the Massart family owned it from 1924 to 2015.

Architecture

The château stands on a rectangular platform surrounded on three sides by moats and reached by a two-arched bridge. The east wing has a richly decorated Renaissance gallery on the courtyard side, with a stone ceiling partly carved with coffers. The south tower keeps Gothic windows and a chapel decorated with 18th-century stucco. Its round corner towers are pierced with gun loops.
