About the château

Château de SerrignyChâteau de SerrignyChâteau de SerrignyChâteau de Serrigny

The Château de Serrigny stands on the western edge of Serrigny, between the village and Aloxe-Corton. It was rebuilt around 1700 on the moated platform of a medieval castle and sits in a large English-style park. The house is private, but the park opens to visitors on a few days each year.

History

Serrigny had a fortified house long before the present château. Its lords included Pierre de Bauffremont, chamberlain to the Duke of Burgundy, in 1439. In 1469 it was held by Marie de Bourgogne, a natural daughter of Duke Philip the Good. By then the old castle had lost its military value, and little of it survives today apart from the moats and two 15th-century elements.

Pierre Brunet de Chailly, president of the Chambre des comptes in Paris, rebuilt the château around 1700, and his lordship of Serrigny was raised to a county. The estate later passed to his nephew Charles du Tillet, then to the Clermont-Montoison and Clermont-Tonnerre families. In 1908 Félix de Mérode became the owner after marrying Françoise de Clermont-Tonnerre. Parts of the house, the moats, the park and the canal were listed as historic monuments in 1992.

Architecture

A bridge crosses the moat to a wide entrance gate framed by an L-shaped building and two rectangular pavilions. The roofs are of flat tiles, pierced by round windows and dormers, and some windows have wrought-iron balconies. Inside, the two salons and the staircase are protected. A stone wall with small turrets encloses the estate, and a round dovecote stands to the south-east.

Visiting

Tips for your visit

The château is a private home and is not open for tours. The park usually opens for the European Heritage Days in September and the Rendez-vous aux jardins in early June. At other times you can see the gates and walls from the road. Ask the Beaune tourist office for this year's dates.
