Day by day

North-west of Beaune, the Auxois keeps some of Burgundy's finest heritage within about an hour and a quarter: Fontenay, one of the best-preserved Cistercian abbeys in the world, the walled hilltop village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, the painted rooms of Bussy-Rabutin and the medieval fortress of Châteauneuf. The light plan gives Fontenay and Châteauneuf a day each, by return trip. The full plan keeps the driver by the hour for two longer days, adding Flavigny, Bussy-Rabutin and the moated Château de Commarin.
