About the restaurant

Le Raisin is a one-Michelin-star restaurant with a hotel in Pont-de-Vaux, a small Bresse town in the Ain facing the Mâconnais across the Saône, about an hour from Beaune. Frédéric Michel took over his wife's family business in 2012 and won the star in 2015. Go for generous, well-judged cooking at fair prices.

The story

Frédéric Michel trained with Régis Marcon and Éric Pras, then worked in England with Daniel Galmiche. In 2012 he and his wife Céline took over Le Raisin from her family, succeeding the previous chef, Gilles Chazot.

The star arrived in 2015 and has stayed. Alongside the restaurant the family runs a small hotel, Les Cépages, and a bistro, Le Grappillon, which makes the house a comfortable base for the southern end of Burgundy. Le Grappillon serves dishes of the day in a relaxed bistro setting: two courses cost €18 and three €20.

The cooking

The cooking reinterprets the culinary tradition of the Bresse in a personal style, with frogs, fish and regional poultry alongside flavours from further afield. The menu changes every four to six weeks, and everything is cooked from fresh produce, so a dish can run out; mention any intolerance or allergy when ordering. The wine list leans towards Burgundy, at reasonable prices, with plenty available by the glass.

Tips for your visit

Pont-de-Vaux is about an hour from Beaune, and the house has its own private car park. A two-course lunch costs €27 from Wednesday to Friday, the seasonal menu €45, the Plaisir menu €69 to €90 and the Gourmandise €115; children up to 12 have a menu at €18, and prices include service. Lunch is served from 12 noon to 1.15 pm and dinner from 7 pm to 8.15 pm in an air-conditioned dining room of wood and stone, with a lounge and, in season, a small terrace for aperitifs; tables of five or more are asked to choose the same menu. Check the opening days when booking. It combines easily with tastings in Viré-Clessé, a few minutes across the river, and a private driver lets you enjoy both.
