About the event
Each December more than thirty artisans, designers and producers set up inside the abbey halls of Saint-Philibert in Tournus. The setting, under Romanesque vaults, makes it one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in southern Burgundy.
What to expect
Browse handmade gifts in the halls, then head to the cellar for spices, sweets, local wines and beer from the town's own brewery. Father Christmas usually makes an appearance. The thirty or so stalls fill the Cellier and Réfectoire des Moines, the monks' cellar and refectory on Place de l'Abbaye, next to the abbey church.
History
The market returns every December. Craftspeople fill the abbey halls with jewellery, ceramics, textiles and decorative pieces, while the old cellar is given over to food and drink.

Tips for the day
Entry is free. Tournus is under an hour from Beaune, and a December afternoon here can include the abbey church itself before the market. With a driver, the wine you buy in the cellar rides home safely in the boot.
