The Domaine de la Folie lies in Chagny, at the northern end of the Côte Chalonnaise, among the vineyards of the Rully appellation. It farms 13 hectares of chardonnay and pinot noir, including some of the most sought-after climats of Rully, such as the premier cru Clos Saint-Jacques, a monopole. Tastings are by appointment, with the family who runs the estate.
The tasting follows the Rully climats of the estate: the Clos Saint-Jacques, a premier cru monopole, the Clos du Chaigne premier cru, the Clos de Bellecroix and the Clos la Folie, along with aligoté and crémant. The family looks for freshness, which it calls the signature of the estate. The range also includes a liqueur de cassis, a ratafia and a marc de Bourgogne.
The name La Folie is very old and may recall, according to some historians, the folia, a dance of fairies: the people of Chagny used to say they saw lights whirling here at night. The estate's family tree is unusual. It includes Étienne-Jules Marey (1830–1904), the scientist who studied movement and invented the chronophotograph, an ancestor of the film camera; the painter Bouton (1860–1954), whose labels are still used; and Noël-Bouton (1906–1994), founder of the Primagaz company and a wine lover who built the cellars and vat rooms.
Jérôme Noël-Bouton, a Paris lawyer until 2012, and his wife Élisabeth developed the estate and its sales abroad and created the Cuvée Marey. Since 2010, Clémence and Baptiste Dubrulle, the fifth generation, have run the domaine.

Tastings are by appointment only and depend on availability, so call or write to the estate before you go. The domaine is at Chagny, close to Rully and Bouzeron and a few minutes from the Côte de Beaune. Allow about an hour, and combine it with the village of Rully and its château.
