About the château

Château de la MaltroyeChâteau de la MaltroyeChâteau de la MaltroyeChâteau de la Maltroye

The Château de la Maltroye stands at the top of the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, on the rue de la Murée. Behind its gate, an 18th-century house, a second dwelling and a winery frame a courtyard that ends in a terrace above a walled vineyard. It is a family wine estate.

History

Chassagne had a fortified house by the 14th century, held from the Duke of Burgundy. In 1481 its lord sold the maison forte, then closed by ditches and walls, to François de Ferrières, lord of Santenay. In the 17th century it stood on a rectangular platform with water-filled moats and a gate tower. The whole was heavily remodelled in the following century, and parts of the old towers were pulled down after the Revolution.

The present house dates from the 18th century and stands over vaulted cellars of the 15th century. The property was acquired by its present family in 1940. It is recorded in the French heritage inventory as a wine estate, with the master's house, a second house at the back of the courtyard and a winery on the west side, all set around one courtyard.

Architecture

The master's house has a mansard roof: slate on the steep lower slopes, and lead-glazed tiles laid in diamond patterns on the upper part. Stone corners and bands frame its plastered walls. A small tiled canopy shelters the door, beside the stairs down to the cellar. To the east, the courtyard forms a terrace overlooking the walled vines below.
