About the château
The Château de Chassagne-Montrachet stands among the vineyards of the Route des Grands Crus, in a landscape listed by UNESCO. It is known above all for its large vaulted cellars of the 14th century. Owned by the Picard family since 1997, it offers cellar visits, tastings and five guest rooms.
History
Chassagne-Montrachet is one of the great white wine villages of the Côte de Beaune, sharing the Montrachet grand cru with its neighbour Puligny. The château's cellars, large and fully vaulted, date from the 14th century, a sign of how long wine has been made and stored on this spot. They are the oldest part of the estate that visitors see today.
In 1997 the Picard family, wine producers in Burgundy, bought the château and made it the home of their estate and a place to receive guests. The château now hosts guided cellar visits, lunches, weddings and seminars, run by a team that speaks several languages. Five guest rooms in its pavilion welcome visitors who want to stay among the vines.
Architecture
The highlight is underground. The 14th-century cellars are large and handsome, with a fully vaulted reception cellar where tastings are held. Above ground, the château and its pavilion of guest rooms stand in the vineyards at the edge of the village. The contrast between the medieval stonework below and the comfortable rooms above is part of the experience.
