About the château
The Château de Puligny-Montrachet stands in the village, inside walls that enclose a plot of vines. Built in the 17th century, it has been the seat of an important wine estate for decades. It now belongs to Artémis Domaines, the wine group of the Pinault family.
History
The château was built in the 17th century, in the heart of the village. Under the First Empire it was restored by its owner, Jean-Baptiste d'Esdouhard, mayor of Beaune and chief administrator of the Côte-d'Or department. From the 1950s, for more than forty years, it belonged to the poet and wine grower Roland Thévenin, who received well-known political, religious and artistic figures at the château.
In 2012 Étienne and Alix de Montille bought the château and its estate. More recently the property passed to Artémis Domaines, the wine group of the Pinault family, which gave vineyards of its Beaune house Bouchard Père & Fils in exchange. A new winery for the group's Domaine des Cabottes is now being built in the grounds, planned to be ready for the 2027 harvest.
Architecture
The main house is rectangular, with a raised ground floor over a half-sunken cellar and a hipped slate roof with curved dormers. Stone pilasters and bands frame the plastered walls. On the east front, a stone staircase with two converging flights leads to the entrance, below a balcony. U-shaped outbuildings of bare stone stand around the courtyard.

Tips for your visit
The château is private and building work is under way, so it is not open to visitors. You can see its walls and vines from the streets of Puligny, a village known for its white wines. Stop for a tasting at one of the village's wine estates instead.
