About the event

On the second-to-last Sunday of October, Flavigny-sur-Ozerain fills its medieval lanes with the Marché de la Saint-Simon, a traditional autumn fair. Stalls of crafts, farm produce and bric-a-brac line the streets, with free concerts and tastings along the way.

What to expect

The fair is built around four themes: crafts, gastronomy, a flea market and local producers. Taste charcuterie, farm cheeses, honey, walnuts and pastries, try the famous Anis in the Carolingian crypt, and sample the wines of the Domaine de Flavigny-Alésia or the beers of the village brewery. Bargain hunters arrive from 9 am for the flea market.

History

When Flavigny was the chief town of its canton, local people traded their produce at regular markets, and the Saint-Simon market was the last and most important of the season, the moment to stock up for winter. The village association Flavigny Animations has gradually revived it since the early 1980s.

Its name recalls the consecration of Flavigny's abbey church on 28 October 878, the feast of the apostles Simon and Jude. Relics of both saints are still kept in the church of Saint-Genest.

Tips for the day

Entry is through a compulsory car park at 3 euros per vehicle, with a small tin of Anis offered, and horse-drawn carriages and buses carry visitors up to the village. Traffic is one-way, in by the Pouillenay road and out by the Vitteaux road. Flavigny is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Beaune, and with a driver you can enjoy the tastings without a thought for the road home.
