About the event
Just before Christmas, the winegrowers of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux open their cellars for the Marché du Réveillon, a market for the festive table that moves from cellar to cellar. Stalls sell wines, snails, poultry, game, foie gras, cheeses and Burgundy truffles, along with local crafts.
What to expect
Walk from cellar to cellar, down stone steps into vaulted rooms, and shop among growers and food producers. The growers sell their own wines, including the Saint-Bris, the only Burgundy appellation made from Sauvignon, so it is also a chance to stock the cellar for the holidays. Above ground, the Gothic church and its painted Tree of Jesse are worth a look.
History
The market is organised by the winegrowers of Saint-Bris. Its name refers to the réveillon, the long French Christmas Eve dinner, and it is timed so that visitors can stock up for it: the 2024 edition was held on 21 and 22 December.
The setting is the real draw. A network of vaulted cellars runs beneath the streets of Saint-Bris, some of them dating back to the 12th century, and they are often called the most impressive in Burgundy.
