About the place

Domaine Jean-Marc BrocardDomaine Jean-Marc BrocardDomaine Jean-Marc BrocardDomaine Jean-Marc Brocard

Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard is a family estate founded in 1973 in Préhy, a village among the vines south-west of Chablis. Run today by Julien Brocard, it is one of the largest producers of Chablis and a pioneer of organic and biodynamic farming in the region. Visitors taste in a panoramic cellar with views over the vineyards.

What you will see

The Discovery tasting, with or without booking, leads through three spaces: a cellar that shows the geology beneath Chablis, a turret with a panoramic view of the vineyard, and the great vat hall, followed by three wines in the cellar. Booked tastings for up to ten people pair five wines with local charcuterie or cheese, or a wider selection with both. The range runs from Bourgogne Chardonnay and Petit Chablis to premiers crus such as Montée de Tonnerre and Vau de Vey and six grands crus, including Les Clos, Valmur and Grenouilles, plus the biodynamic Les 7 Lieux range.

History

Jean-Marc Brocard came from a farming family in the Côte-d'Or and trained as an engineer. Through his wife's family, growers in Saint-Bris-le-Vineux, he discovered the vine, and the experienced vigneron Louis Petit taught him the craft. In 1973, the year his son Julien was born, he planted his first vines in Préhy and built the winery that became the family house.

Julien joined his father in 1995 after engineering studies, and from 1997 he farmed an 11-hectare Chablis plot, La Boissonneuse, organically and biodynamically. Today the family farms about 240 hectares, with 60 hectares certified organic and 40 biodynamic, and sells some 3.2 million bottles a year. Projects since 2006 include gravity-fed grape reception, reed-bed water filtering, braided vines that are not trimmed, small vineyard robots and geothermal energy.

Planning your visit

Tips for your visit

Allow about 45 minutes for the Discovery tasting and up to an hour and a half for a paired tasting. Préhy is about 6 km south-west of Chablis and about 1 hour 30 minutes from Beaune, so the domaine fits into a Chablis day between the town and Saint-Bris. Book paired tastings online at least 48 hours ahead. The family also offers guest houses and apartments in Chablis and Saint-Cyr-les-Colons.
