About the event
Each spring the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges sell the wines of their own vineyards at auction, beneath the vaults of the Château du Clos de Vougeot. Held months before the famous Beaune sale in November, it gives an early look at the new vintage and sets the Côte de Nuits in motion for a whole weekend.
What to expect
The sale brings together buyers, growers and wine lovers under the vaults of the Clos de Vougeot, with bids also arriving online. Lots of the young vintage go under the hammer one by one, and the charity lot adds a moment of generosity to the afternoon. Around it, Nuits-Saint-Georges hosts a growers' tasting and a chocolate fair in its covered market, and a half marathon runs through the vineyards on the Saturday.
History
The Hôpital Saint-Laurent in Nuits-Saint-Georges was founded in the 17th century, and between 1695 and 1703 it acquired vineyards. Its buildings date mainly from the late 17th century, and the hospital still works as a medical establishment today. The annual sale of its wines began in 1961, linking the town's long history of caring for the sick with its growers, merchants and wine lovers.
The 2026 sale, the 65th, was organised with the iDealwine platform and broadcast live on Drouot Live. It raised about 1.5 million euros, with every lot sold, and presented the 2025 vintage. It was also the last vintage made by Jean-Marc Moron, estate manager since 1990, before Laurence Danel took over. A charity lot, the Cuvée des Bienfaiteurs, supported a local association.

Tips for the day
Ask the Hospices or the Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges tourist office whether public seats are available before you plan around the sale itself; the growers' salon in Nuits is the easier way to taste. The Château du Clos de Vougeot is about 25 minutes north of Beaune by the D974, five minutes beyond Nuits-Saint-Georges. A private driver drops you at the château gate, lets you move between Vougeot and Nuits and taste without worrying about the drive home.
