About the place

The belfry on Place de la République is the symbol of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Its tower, topped by an octagonal lantern, rises above the old town hall and still marks the hours with an automatic carillon. It is not open inside, but it is worth a pause on any walk through the town centre.

What you will see

Stand in Place de la République to take in the tower, its lantern and Paul Cabet's bust on the facade. Listen for the carillon as it marks the hours. The town museum, the shops, the wine merchants and the cafés of the centre are all within a short walk. The belfry makes an easy meeting point before exploring the old streets on foot.

History

The square building that holds the belfry went up between 1610 and 1619 in the old commercial heart of the town. Between 1619 and 1629 a two-storey tower, with a cellar beneath, was built into it as a watchtower. The octagonal lantern was added to the top in 1633. The whole building housed the town hall of Nuits-Saint-Georges until 1833.

Its design shows a Flemish influence. One of the bells in its carillon dates from 1619 and is itself protected, and a bust by the sculptor Paul Cabet decorates the facade. The belfry has been protected as a historic monument since 1947. It stands on the Route des Grands Crus, about five kilometres from the Château du Clos de Vougeot.

Planning your visit

Tips for your visit

The belfry can only be seen from outside, so a short stop is enough. Combine it with the town museum nearby, a visit to one of the Nuits wine houses or lunch in the centre. The tourist office on rue Sonoys has town maps and ideas for walks. Check the official website for events in the square.
