About the place

The Hôtel des Postes on Place Grangier is the building Dijon people call the Grande Poste. The architect Louis Perreau designed it in a style inspired by Louis XVI, and it opened in 1909 on the site of the old castle of Dijon. Today it houses a post office, a hotel and offices, behind facades listed as historic monuments.

What you will see

Start on Place Grangier and look at the corner of the building, cut at an angle, where a large clock is framed by Paul Gasq's sculptures of Day and Night. High on the main facade, two oval medallions hold mosaic cockerels, the emblem of the old French postal service. If the post office is open, step into the public hall with its coffered ceiling. In front stands Le Compteur du temps, a sculpture by Gloria Friedmann unveiled in 2020: a sphere set with clocks showing the time in cities around the world.

History

From the end of the Middle Ages, the site of Place Grangier was taken up by the castle of Dijon, built from 1478 to 1510 after Burgundy passed to the French crown. The castle was pulled down between 1891 and 1897. On part of its site, Louis Perreau, one of the leading Dijon architects of the time, built the new post office from 1907. It was inaugurated on 24 October 1909, with a metal turret that held the telephone exchange and the telegraph.

The post office was enlarged from 1927, with an Art Deco wing completed in 1932 by Charles Danne and Gilles Delavault, the regional architect of the postal service. The street and courtyard facades, the entrance gate, the public hall, the grand staircase and the castle's old well were listed as historic monuments in 2013. After major works, the post office now uses only part of the building. The rest holds offices and a four-star hotel that opened in 2024.

Tips for your visit

The facades can be seen at any time, free, and a stop of 15 to 20 minutes is enough. The public hall can be seen during post office opening hours. Place Grangier is a few minutes' walk from Les Halles and rue de la Liberté. Louis Perreau's Art Nouveau building at the corner of rue du Château and rue du Temple stands right next door.
