About the event

Each autumn the Château du Clos de Vougeot hosts a world championship devoted to oeufs en meurette, eggs poached in a red wine sauce. Over three days, apprentices, amateurs and professional chefs compete, while visitors taste the château's own version and watch the contest.

What to expect

Friday features the apprentices' contest, Saturday the amateurs and Sunday the world championship itself, followed by a gala dinner. Tasting sessions run from late morning, with round-table talks, cooking demonstrations and activities for children in the château's cellar, vat house and courtyard.

History

Oeufs en meurette have been served at every meal held at the château since 1953, whatever the rest of the menu. The championship was launched in 2019, with qualifying rounds abroad, such as a North American heat in Montreal. The 8th edition, from 9 to 11 October 2026, is presided over by the chef Jean-François Piège, and the first world champion was the chef Frédéric Vardon.

Tips for the day

In 2026 the tasting ticket costs 39 euros for adults and 19 euros for ages 7 to 18, with free entry for younger children; it includes château access, eggs with a glass of red Burgundy and a dessert. A private driver lets you enjoy the red Burgundy served with the eggs and skip the search for parking in a small village.
