About the place
Saint-Philibert, beside the cathedral of Saint-Bénigne, is the only Romanesque church in Dijon. It was the parish of the city's winegrowers, one of the reasons it counts among Dijon's places linked to the Climats of Burgundy. Closed to worship since the Revolution, it is now closed to visitors for a major restoration, with reopening planned for around 2029.
What you will see
Even from outside, the Romanesque walls stand apart from Dijon's later buildings. Centuries of salt and damp have badly damaged the stone, above all in the pillars that carry the building, which is why it needs such a long restoration. The church is a stop on the Owl's Trail, a minute from the cathedral and the Archaeological Museum, so it fits easily into a walk around this western corner of the old town.
History
Built in the 12th century, Saint-Philibert served the winegrowers' quarter, and the start date of the grape harvest, the ban des vendanges, was proclaimed here. After the Revolution it became a stable, then a saltpetre store and a salt warehouse. Salt rising through the stone, together with damp, eroded the building so badly that it was closed to the public in 1979.
From 2002 the church opened for European Heritage Days and special events. After safety work, the city also used it in the warmer months for contemporary art exhibitions, organised with the Fine Arts Museum, the Consortium, the FRAC and the national art school. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1862. In July 2025, for the tenth anniversary of the Climats listing, visitors could view the nave from the entrance. In September 2025 the city approved a restoration costing about 12 million euros, with works planned from 2026 and reopening to the public around 2029.
