About the place
The Maison Millière is a half-timbered house built in 1483 at 10 rue de la Chouette, a few steps from the owl carved on Notre-Dame. Its timber frame, stone arches and steep roof give a rare picture of a late medieval merchant's home. Today the ground floor holds a tea room and a shop of crafts and regional products.
What you will see
Stand across the narrow street to take in the whole facade. On the ground floor, wide basket-handle arches once opened onto the merchant's shop. Above, the dark timber frame and the steep tiled roof show how a wealthy Dijon family lived at the end of the Middle Ages. Look for the small carved cat on the facade. The owl of Notre-Dame, the city's good-luck charm, is just around the corner.
History
The cloth merchant Guillaume Millière and his wife, Guillemette Durand, had the house built in 1483 near the apse of Notre-Dame, a short walk from the Palace of the Dukes. In the 17th century the Hôtel de Vogüé rose next door, so the street now sets a medieval merchant's house beside a magistrate's mansion. The Maison Millière has been classified as a historic monument since 1943.
The house was restored in 1998 and turned into a shop, tea room and restaurant of Burgundian cooking. Its looks have also made it a film set. In 1989 Jean-Paul Rappeneau shot scenes of Cyrano de Bergerac in front of it, with Gérard Depardieu, Anne Brochet and Vincent Perez.

Tips for your visit
The facade can be seen at any time, and a short stop is enough. The house is a private business: inside are a tea room, a shop of crafts and regional products, and a brasserie that opens at weekends. The tea room and shop are closed on Mondays. The house stands on the Owl's Trail, between Notre-Dame and the Hôtel de Vogüé, so it fits into any walk through the old town.
