About the place
North of the old town, on the rue de Chorey, the former Carmelite convent of Beaune is now a diocesan sanctuary dedicated to the Child Jesus. Its story goes back to a young 17th-century nun, Marguerite Parigot. A community of Carmelite sisters welcomes pilgrims and visitors to its chapel.
What you will see
The chapel is open to visitors for quiet prayer and reflection, and it is the heart of the sanctuary's devotion to the Child Jesus. The mood is contemplative, so this is a place for a calm pause rather than a sightseeing stop. It is also possible to visit the monastery and to meet one of the sisters by appointment. Pilgrims and visitors come here in search of peace and comfort in prayer.
History
Carmelite nuns settled in Beaune in 1619, in the former priory of Saint-Étienne. Marguerite Parigot, born the same year, entered the convent at the age of eleven. Known as Sister Marguerite of the Blessed Sacrament, she spread devotion to the childhood of Christ. In December 1643 Gaston de Renty gave her and the Carmel a statue of the Child Jesus, honoured as the King of Grace.
Expelled during the Revolution in 1792, the Carmelites returned to Beaune in the early 19th century and moved to the present site on the rue de Chorey in 1836. Enclosed religious life continued there until 2001. In 2014 the Archbishop of Dijon made the old Carmel a diocesan sanctuary, and the Carmelite Sisters of the Child Jesus arrived to lead it.
