About the place

Mulot & Petitjean has made Dijon gingerbread, pain d'épices, since 1796. Its factory on boulevard de l'Ouest, built in 1912, is the last gingerbread works still active in Dijon. A museum space tells the story of the house and the craft, and large windows look down on the bakers at work.

What you will see

Follow a themed route through about 450 square metres of displays, mixing period tools with sound and sensory scenes. Audioguides are available in French, English and German, or on your phone by QR code. Through large windows you watch today's production in the workshop below. The visit ends in the shop, where you can buy gingerbread, nonnettes and other Dijon sweets.

History

Dijon gingerbread is a honey cake made with wheat flour and spices such as cinnamon, ginger, star anise, coriander and clove. Local tradition says it reached Burgundy from Flanders with the dukes. Founded in 1796, Mulot & Petitjean is still a family firm, and in March 2012 it received the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label for its history and rare know-how.

For its 220th anniversary in 2016, the company built an extension of more than 1,000 square metres at its historic site. The project renewed the production tools and created a museum space and a shop in the oldest part of the building. The house also makes nonnettes, small round gingerbread cakes filled with jam. All of it is still made here, in the historic factory on boulevard de l'Ouest.
