Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Beaune's great family wine houses, founded in 1880 and still led by the founder's great-grandchildren. Its cellars lie beneath the oldest part of town, close to the Collégiale. Visits and tastings start from the Oenothèque on the place du Général Leclerc and are by appointment.
Guided visits lead you through the historic cellars, where old walls and vaulted galleries surround wines ageing in barrel, followed by a tasting. The house offers several formats, from daily visits and tastings to special experiences and walks in the vines, and bookings can be made in English. The Oenothèque also includes a shop where you can buy the wines.
Joseph Drouhin settled in Beaune in 1880, in the rue d'Enfer, to age his wines. The house was then led by his son Maurice and by his grandson Robert, who ran it from 1957 to 2003. In the early 1960s Robert Drouhin bought and restored the cellars and vat house of the canons of Notre-Dame. The family also founded a sister estate, Domaine Drouhin, in Oregon.
The buildings tell much of Beaune's history. According to the house, its cellars include remains of the walls of the Roman castrum and traces of the town's first church. Above part of them stands the old Parliament of Burgundy, where the dukes presided over sessions. After Louis XI took the town it became a royal residence, and one cellar served the kings of France.

Allow about an hour and a half for a visit and tasting. Book ahead, especially in autumn and at weekends. The Oenothèque faces the Collégiale Notre-Dame, so the two make an easy pair. Check the official website for the current choice of visits.

For the visit, allow about 1.5 hours.
Did you know? One of Drouhin's cellars once served the kings of France, and the house says its walls include remains of Beaune's Roman castrum, some fifteen centuries old.
