About the place

Every Saturday morning, Beaune's market spreads from the covered halls across the place de la Halle, the place Fleury and the avenue de la République. With around 180 traders, it is where locals shop for vegetables, meat, cheese, spices and farm produce. A smaller food market is held on Wednesday mornings.

What you will see

Wander under the halls, where the butchers have their stalls, then out into the squares for fruit and vegetables, cheeses, spices and the rotisseries of the place Fleury. Organic growers and small farms from the surrounding countryside sell here too. In summer, a flea market on the place Carnot adds a touch of nostalgia. It is a good place to gather a picnic for a day in the vineyards. The Wednesday market is smaller and keeps to the place de la Halle, with a number of stalls that varies through the year; from spring it has everything to fill a basket, from local vegetables and fresh salad to a small roast and a few flowers.

History

The halles of Beaune stand opposite the Hôtel-Dieu, at the centre of town life. Each Saturday they host the weekly market, and each November they become the setting for the Hospices de Beaune wine auction. The Wednesday market is reserved for food and tableware and gathers about 25 traders on the place de la Halle and under the covered halls, a more intimate version of the Saturday market.

Planning your visit

Tips for your visit

Come early for the best choice: on Saturdays the stalls are out from early morning until 13:00, and the Wednesday market, for food and tableware only, runs from 7:00 to 12:30. Both markets are held on public holidays too, except that when 1 May, 25 December or 31 December falls on a market day, the market moves by one day. Combine it with the Hôtel-Dieu, directly opposite.
